About Planet Labs PBC

Planet Labs PBC engages in the design, construction, and launch of constellations of satellites with the intent of providing high-cadence geospatial data delivered to customers through an online platform in the United States and internationally. The company offers SuperDove satellites to create an always-online scanner for the planet, with the goal of imaging the Earth every day at a ground sampling distance (GSD) resolution of up to 3.5 meters.

The commercial space industry

The commercial space industry spans rocket launch, satellite manufacturing, Earth-observation imaging and space-based communications. It is capital-intensive and still maturing, but launch costs have fallen sharply and demand is rising from defense, communications and data customers. The link to AI is mainly data and autonomy: space systems generate vast imagery and sensor streams that AI models analyze, and increasingly rely on onboard autonomy — making this an adjacent layer of the broader AI-and-data build-out rather than a pure AI play. Planet Labs operates a large fleet of imaging satellites and sells the Earth-observation data and analytics they produce — a data business as much as a space one.
